Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) will be hosting the Safety Day Camp for children ages 6 to 14 Thursday, June 10, at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp is open to all children in the area and it instructs many areas of safety in every child’s life.
Children often see the outdoors as an exciting playground that provides endless hours of fun and adventure. But the great outdoors can set the stage for tragedy. That is why this Safety Day Camp was established by Veterans Memorial Hospital and the Iowa State University (ISU) Extension Allamakee County Office 21 years ago.

Each year, many children are killed or injured due to accidents. Safety day camps are held to teach children how to prevent injuries and reduce the risk of accidents.    During the camp, children participate in interactive activities that reinforce the importance of taking responsibility for their own safety, respecting parents’ safety rules and sharing safety tips with their family and friends.

Hands-on demonstrations teach lifesaving first aid techniques and reveal the hidden hazards of their surroundings. Camp demonstrations also focus on farm hazards associated with many various safety topics.

The camp program allows community leaders to structure a camp that covers basic safety issues and first aid, as well as addressing specific local needs. Local farmers, manufacturers, and merchants donate their time and equipment to ensure that each camp is a fun and valuable learning experience.

Parents can register their children to participate in the camp by picking up a registration form at the main entrance of VMH or from the ISU Extension Allamakee County Office. Or you may register for the camp online at www.veteransmemorialhospital.com. Only the first 150 applications will be accepted. A small registration fee is required for the event which covers lunch, snacks, a take-home goodie bag, first aid kit and a safety day camp t-shirt. For questions, contact VMH at 563-568-3411.
