Senior Carter Schellsmidt breaks career hit record more than a quarter century old
The Waukon baseball team was just a game away from an undefeated week, winning five of six games played this past week. The baseball Tribe opened the week with a home doubleheader sweep of Crestwood Monday, June 12 by scores of 16-6 in five innings and 11-4 before claiming a 7-2 win at Dubuque Senior Tuesday, June 13. The wins kept coming at Osage Thursday, June 15 with an 8-2 triumph, before the Indians split a home doubleheader with Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, June 16, falling in game one by a 9-1 result before bouncing back with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
That road to near perfection team-wise also featured some individual history made along the way, as senior Carter Schellsmidt became the all-time leader in career hits for the Waukon baseball program with a two-run double in the second inning of the Tribe’s 4-1 second-game win over Waverly-Shell Rock. That hit surpassed the previous record of 140 hits amassed by 1996 Waukon High School graduate Brian Curtin, who set his name atop numerous Waukon baseball records before playing baseball at Iowa State University and for the Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians (now the Guardians) of Major League Baseball fame.
Now holding a 13-11 season record that includes a mark of 6-8 in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play, the Indians were next scheduled to host New Hampton Tuesday, June 20 in a NEIC double-dip, play two games at Oelwein Thursday, June 22 and then play another NEIC twinbill at Decorah Friday, June 23. They will then wrap up their regular season schedule with another home NEIC doubleheader at Charles City Monday, June 26 before playing at MFL/MarMac Wednesday, June 28, with Class 2A District Tournament play scheduled to begin Saturday, July 1 at a site and against an opponent yet to be determined.
