Kee baseball team has season ended with 4-1 loss at South Winn

Lone senior gets game’s final hit ... Kee baseball senior designated hitter Jacob Rolfs awaits his turn at the plate in the Hawks’ 4-1 Class 1A District Semifinals loss at South Winneshiek Wednesday, July 5. Rolfs went one-for-three at the plate in the ballgame, fittingly collecting the Hawks’ final hit of the season, a seventh-inning single with two outs that kept their hopes and his high school career in play for at least one more batter before both came to a close with the loss. For the fourth time this season, the Kee baseball team was facing off against a South Winneshiek team that has been its greatest rival in recent years, with this fourth match-up having much more riding on it than their previous three regular season contests when the two teams took to the field Wednesday, July 5 in Calmar in the Class 1A District 6 semifinals. That rivalry of recent years has produced some classic baseball battles between the two clubs, with this semifinals match-up further adding to that mix as the Hawks gave the host Warriors yet another close battle but ended up surrendering their fourth end result this season by three runs or less, this time by a 4-1 final score that brought Kee’s 2023 season to a close.

The loss ends Kee’s season with a 19-19 overall record, including a mark of 12-6 that placed the Hawks second in Upper Iowa Conference play. With its win, South Winneshiek advanced on to a Saturday, July 8 Class 1A District 6 championship match-up at home against Wapsie Valley, a game the Warriors won by a 7-4 final result to advance to the Class 1A Substate 3 championship game against North Linn Tuesday, July 11 at Waverly, with the winner of that game playing in the Class 1A State Tournament.
