Vote totals from the Tuesday, November 7 City/School Election have resulted in a run-off election being required to determine a winner of the At-Large seat on the Waukon City Council listed on this year’s ballot. With Waukon City Code requiring that the winning candidate in such an election receive at least a 50%-plus one vote majority, the three candidates vying for that single At-Large seat each received in the neighborhood of just one-third of the vote total cast in the November 7 balloting for that race.

Incumbent candidate Andrew Sires received 225 votes (33.73%). Challenger Nicholas Engrav garnered 245 votes (36.73%), and challenger Jean Brink collected 196 votes (29.39%).

Further direction from City Code outlines that the top two vote recipients in such a race result must then square off in a run-off election to determine a winner. As recipients of the top two vote totals, Engrav and Sires will now square off in that run-off election, which has been scheduled for Tuesday, December 5.

It should be noted for this run-off election that there will be only one polling location, and that polling site will be at the Allamakee County Courthouse in the Board of Supervisors room on the first floor. Eligible voters for this run-off election must reside within the city limits of Waukon, and all three voting wards will vote at that single courthouse polling site. Polling place hours will be 7 a.m.- 8 p.m. for that Tuesday, December 5 election day.

In-person absentee voting will be available in the Allamakee County Auditor’s office in the courthouse. Anyone wishing to vote absentee may do so during the Auditor’s office open hours from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, up through Monday, December 4 at 4 p.m.

The Auditor’s office will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday both November 23 and 24. Anyone needing additional information about the December 5 run-off election may call the Auditor’s office at 563-568-3522 during office hours.
