September is National Cholesterol Awareness Month: Know your numbers

VMH Lab offers Walk-In Wellness Testing for cholesterol ... September is National Cholesterol Awareness Month. The Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Lab, pictured in the surrounding photos, offers community wellness testing including cholesterol lipid panels, at a low upfront cost, to help accommodate individuals that may forgo these important tests due to the high cost of health insurance premiums and deductibles. For more information, call the Laboratory at 563-568-3411. Submitted photos.

September is National Cholesterol Awareness Month. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) explains cholesterol as a waxy, fat-like substance made by your liver. Blood cholesterol is essential for good health. Your body needs it to perform important jobs, such as making hormones and digesting fatty foods.

Your body makes all the blood cholesterol it needs, which is why experts recommend that people eat as little dietary cholesterol as possible while on a healthy eating plan. Dietary cholesterol is found in animal foods, including meat, seafood, poultry, eggs and dairy products.

Clean Hands Week observed by VMH and IDPH; Good hand washing really does make a difference

This is Clean Hands Week. Washing hands and washing them well is a great way to help stop the spread of disease, especially the flu this coming winter. It is recommended that good hand washing, along with eating a well-balanced diet and getting enough rest, will help stop the spread of the flu.

The following facts from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) will help explain the benefits and the best way of washing hands.
• Use soap and warm or hot running water.
• Take at least 15 to 20 seconds to do the washing.
• Wash all surfaces using a vigorous rubbing (friction) including: wrists, palms, back of hands, between fingers and as much as possible under the fingernails.
• Rinse under running water.
• Away from home, dry using disposable paper towels or hot air blower, if possible.
• At home, provide a separate towel for each member of the household, and wash towels regularly in hot water and detergent.
