Deadline is July 1 to register for Allamakee County 2011 Fair Queen competition

The Allamakee County Fair Board is seeking applicants for the 2011 Allamakee County Fair Queen contest, with this year's fair running July 20-24.
The contest will run similarly to that of the Iowa State Fair Queen Contest. Each girl will dress appropriately and either give a presentation on highlights of her Allamakee County Fair experience or perform a talent, in addition to being involved in various events sponsored by the Fair Board.
There will be one formal interview conducted by judges. This is where the majority of the judging will take place. New to the contest this year, the winner will be announced Tuesday night, July 19 in a stand-alone pageant event being held at the Pavilion building on the Allamakee County Fairgrounds. The winner will receive her Fair Queen Crown at this event, and the runner-up winner will be named Allamakee County Fair Princess. All candidates will be part of the Allamakee County Fair Royalty Team that will preside over the remaining events at the fair.

Additional entertainment at the Fair Queen pageant will include a Power Point presentation by Allamakee County 4-H'ers involved in the Citizenship Club trip to Washington, D.C. earlier this year, as well as some Share the Fun presentations by Allamakee County 4-H members.
Anyone interested in competing for Fair Queen should detach the entry form in this week's print edition of The Standard and send it to the address listed at the bottom of the form by July 1. The first eight individuals to return their entry forms will be candidates this year, with an absolute maximum of 10 contestants being accepted. A Fair Board member will contact each contestant to offer more information.
When signing the completed form in this week's print edition of The Standard, each contestant agrees to the following rules:
(1) Each contestant must be between the ages of 16 and 21 as of August 2011, and must be a resident of Allamakee County or attend school in Allamakee County.
(2) Each contestant must be an active member of at least one service organization. Those service groups can include a church group, Girl Scouts, FBLA, etc. and do not necessarily have to include membership in 4-H or FFA.
(3) Each contestant must be able to represent Allamakee County at the 2011 Iowa State Fair, August 11-21.
Each contestant competing for Allamakee County Fair Queen this year will have her picture and biography printed in the newspaper prior to the 2011 Allamakee County Fair.
