Expanded Corn Days celebration offers more family activities

This year’s Sweet Corn Days celebration in Waukon will offer more activities for families. In addition to the Heritage Parade being held Monday, August 2 at 7 p.m., the week-long festival will also feature “Park It” at the Waukon City Park, Wednesday, August 4 from 6 to 11 p.m. Another new attraction during the celebration will be inflatable rides in the Waukon State Bank parking lot Thursday, August 5 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Heritage Parade
The Heritage Parade will take place Monday, August 2 at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to enter the parade should come to the Allamakee County Fairgrounds no later than 6:45 p.m. to line up for the parade. Allowed entries include tractors, automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, or other vehicles from 1985 or earlier, keeping in line with the parade’s heritage theme. Any floats must be pulled by a vintage vehicle as well.
The parade will travel south from the fairgrounds down Allamakee Street to the four-way stoplight intersection with Main Street. A right turn onto West Main Street will take the parade entries up to the intersection with Second Street (Post Office location), where the entries will then take a left onto Second Street SW for a block and then turn east onto First Avenue SW to make their way to the following parking lot locations for further display for the public: Tractors at St. Patrick School/Church parking lot; Automobiles and other vehicles at Waukon State Bank parking lot.

Park It
All ages are welcome to either participate or just enjoy watching the "Park It" event, Wednesday, August 4 from 6 to 11 p.m. at Waukon City Park. Many organized activities will be offered, such as dodgeball, disc golf, kayak races, and glow-in-the-dark volleyball, in addition to others. Swimming at the pool will be offered for just $1 per person from 7 to 9 p.m. Live music will also be provided at this free event, as well as hot dogs and lemonade.
A schedule and sign-up sheet for all activities will be located in the Thompson Shelter at the Waukon City Park that night. Everyone attending is encouraged to bring a good pair of walking shoes and be ready to get involved, get moving, laugh and have fun. Feel free to bring a lawn chair for watching the activities. In case of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled.
The event is being offered in an effort to encourage wellness throughout the community, as well as help attendees experience all of the recreation the Waukon City Park has to offer all ages. Volunteers are needed to help coordinate the evening’s events. Contact Dani Bucknell at the Waukon Wellness Center at 563-568-0074 to volunteer.

Celebration continues

The Sweet Corn Days celebration will continue Thursday, August 5 in the Waukon State Bank parking lot. The $3 meal includes a pulled pork sandwich and milk. Sweet corn is free. Additional cartons of milk are available for $.50 each. Children’s rides will include an enclosed “bouncer” and an inflatable slide. The admission price of $3 will entitle each child to a wristband which will give them unlimited turns on both rides. Music will be provided by KNEI.
