Five area individuals to be honored by Red Cross as "Everyday Heroes of the Tri-States"

The American Red Cross of the Tri-States, along with corporate sponsors Dupaco Community Credit Union, KWWL, and Radio Dubuque stations (KAT-FM, KDTH, 97.3 The Rock, and The River), recently announced the winners of their 10th Annual Everyday Heroes of the Tri-States honoring. A total of 16 Everyday Heroes will be recognized for 10 different acts of heroism and include people from Allamakee, Dubuque, Howard and Winneshiek counties in Iowa.
The Heroes will be honored at a breakfast event Tuesday, March 19 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Best Western Plus, located at 3100 Dodge Street in Dubuque.
Within those 16 honorees is a group of five area individuals who are being honored for their efforts in an August 2012 traffic accident in Allamakee County that helped prevent an already tragic event from becoming even more so. Darryl Brink, Justin Hager, Janet Schroeder and Keith Schroeder of Waukon, and Walker Hovey of Decorah are all being honored with the Adult Good Samaritan Award at the March 19 event for helping the Patrick Egan family escape further harm from the fiery wreckage of the two-vehicle accident they were involved in that day.
In addition to those five local individuals, the following additional individuals will also be honored March 19:
• Adult Good Samaritan: Kristen Agena of Cresco
• Adult Good Samaritan: Shari Huber of Eldridge
• Adult Good Samaritan: Kelsey Millonig of St. Ansgar
• Adult Good Samaritan: Scott Taylor of Zwingle
• Education: Judi Simon of Dubuque
• Fire and Rescue: Steve Vanden Brink of Decorah
• Health Care: Sherry Kirtz of Dubuque
• Health Care: Joel Reicks of Dubuque
• Industrial/Workplace Safety: Joe Hearn of Dubuque
• Volunteer Community Impact: Mike Breitbach of Sherrill
• Youth Good Samaritan:     Alex Wehrspann of Dubuque.

Also of note, Jan Pfiffner of Harpers Ferry was also nominated for Everyday Heroes of the Tri-States honoring, and although not being designated for an award at the March 19 event she will receive Honorable Mention in the event program. Pfiffner was nominated for assisting an individual with diabetes during an insulin reaction last year along Elon Road.
The 2013 honorees were selected by an independent selection committee, after reviewing nominations submitted by Tri-State area residents. In addition, a National Lifesaving Award for the Professional Responder will be presented to Brad Hennen, a 2012 Everyday Hero, for saving the life of Heaven Adams in October 2011.
The public is invited to the breakfast. Reservations are required and can be done so by calling Sue Olsen at 563-564-4564 or online at www.redcross.org/tristates.
