Karen Burke to speak at April 7 Women's Lenten Ecumenical Breakfast event

The next Women’s Lenten Ecumenical Breakfast will be held Thursday, April 7 at 6:45 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. All women in the area are invited to attend.
Karen Burke of Waukon will be sharing her experiences and involvement with the Children’s Health Fund as a registered nurse serving the Allamakee Community School District.
Karen and her husband, Brian, live in rural Dorchester along the Upper Iowa River Valley. She has been a school nurse the past seven years and has worked in the community as a nurse for the past 30 years. Her mentoring, providing guidance, and clinical experiences as a professional nurse in Allamakee Community Schools has been rewarding and enlightening.
Karen was raised on a farm in rural Waukon and has a great appreciation of the area and its people. Returning to the rural area has allowed her time to enjoy the country life working in the yard, reading, or spending leisure time sewing. Brian and Karen are parents of four children, Brad, Alicia (Jake Frey), Kristin (Mike Wadsworth) and Brianne. The Burkes have two grandsons and enjoy activities and entertaining with their children and grandchildren.
Karen will share the history and purpose of the Children’s Health fund originated by Norma Flage. Helping students meet diverse needs and promoting social, emotional, and academic growth are essential tools of learning. It truly takes a community to raise a child and collaborative involvement of many to help a child succeed. Karen speaks on behalf of all school nurses thanking others for the gifts they have given in aiding a child.
The last Women’s Lenten Ecumenical Breakfast of this season will be April 14 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon. Karen Carlton will be presenting the Ecumenical Lenten breakfast program Thursday, April 14, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She will be speaking on “Pivotal Points” concerning choices people make.
Karen and her husband, Bob Carlton, have lived in Waukon for over 20 years. She has been a teacher of English and Literature in high school and middle school for over 20 years. She has also taught GED courses and written for the newspaper. The Carltons have two sons and two new grandsons and are active in their church.
