National Park Week at Effigy Mounds National Monument

Saturday, April 17 will kick off National Park Week, the annual week-long celebration and recognition of America’s National Parks, at Effigy Mounds National Monument.  Admission to the park is free April 17-25. Special movies, hikes, volunteer opportunities, and activities will be held throughout the week and will culminate with National Junior Ranger Day Saturday, April 24.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, the movies will start and there will be a Bird and Nature Walk that will last approximately one hour. Thursday, April 22, is also Earth Day and the monument has planned a 10 a.m. walk along the Yellow River Bridge Trail. Later in the day, at 1 p.m., there will be a Tyke Hike, also along the Yellow River Bridge Trail. The trail covers less than a mile and is fully accessible to children, strollers, and wheelchairs.
Effigy Mounds’ Invasive Plant Removal Conservation Project will be held Saturday, April 25 at 9 a.m. Volunteers will be helping to remove invasive plants such as garlic mustard from the monument. Those who wish to be a volunteer should call the monument at 563-873-3491 to sign up.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring drinking water, gloves, appropriate clothing for working in the brush, and sturdy footwear. A light lunch will be provided.
National Park Week will end Saturday, April 24 with National Jr. Ranger Day. Kids ages six to 12 are invited to the monument to participate in storytelling, ranger-guided hikes, and other activities to earn a special edition National Junior Ranger Day certificate and patch. Events will begin at 1 p.m. in the visitor center.
