Paul Schafer earns Eagle Scout rank; Court of Honor to be held this Saturday

Paul Schafer of Boy Scout Troop 64 in Waukon will be honored at an Eagle Court of Honor Saturday, June 2 at 1 p.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waterville. Schafer appeared before the Eagle Board of Review in November 2011 and was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He is one of the approximately four percent of all Boy Scouts nationally who attain the rank of Eagle Scout.
Schafer began his scouting career as a Tiger Cub in first grade. He was actively involved in Cub Scouting until May 14, 2005 when he earned the Arrow of Light award and crossed over to Boy Scouts from Cub Scouts. In addition to the Arrow of Light, Schafer has awards for Red Flannel Camping, Totin’ Chip, Firem’n Chit, World Conservation Award, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Schafer has been involved in many service projects within the community, including Christmas tree pick-up, selling poppies, delivering meals for the St. Patrick’s Day supper, and trail clean-up. He has participated in omelet breakfasts, wreath sales and flag retirement ceremonies, along with weekend camp-outs and camporees. Schafer has also served as troop scribe and chaplain’s aide.
On his journey to Eagle Scout, Schafer has earned 23 merit badges. For his Eagle Scout Project, Schafer sought the approval of St. Patrick School to clean, remodel, inventory and organize the Physical Education storage room and office. He planned a fundraiser, selling popcorn and pop to St. Patrick School students on their reading reward day to partially fund the project. Generous donations of supplies by area businesses and the volunteer manpower of many scouts and adults made the much-needed project a resounding success.
Schafer is a recent graduate of Waukon High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in basketball, as a student manager, band and golf. He plans on attending Luther College in Decorah. An active member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, Schafer is the son of David and Loretta Schafer of Waukon.
