Standard Newspaper among many downtown businesses forced to close due to flash flooding

The office of The Standard Newspaper, located on First Street Northwest in Waukon, was just one of many downtown business forced to temporarily close as a result of flash flooding that occured in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 23. As a result, The Standard was not published this week, but is expected to be delivered as usual next week, Wednesday, July 3.
Flood waters reached approximately five feet at the front of the building that houses The Standard's offices and approximately three and a half feet throughout the office itself, destroying all of the computers used to create each week's newspaper, along with all of the office furniture and other equipment.
A small army of volunteers assisted the newspaper's staff Tuesday, June 25 with the removal of all of the furniture, equipment and debris. We are all deeply grateful for this assistance. There is much work left to be done to bring the office back to its original condition, and The Standard has gratefully accepted an offer from the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors to utilize temporary office space at Makee Manor during that process.
