Students can take a "Walking School Bus" to school in Waukon this spring courtesy of NIFF

This spring, students attending school in Waukon will have the opportunity to jump on board a Walking School Bus for a safe, active way to get to school.
Coordinated by the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness (NIFF) Initiative, a Walking School Bus is a group of students walking to school with one or more responsible supervisors. NIFF leaders explain that Walking School Buses get kids moving and active, which has proven to be essential for healthy growth and development. Studies have shown that kids who are active before school have higher academic scores and behave better in the classroom.
The Allamakee Community School District Walking School Bus will provide a safe and fun way for students to get to school. The Walking School Bus will have trained adult supervisors, use sidewalks and cross the street where school crossing guards are stationed when possible. The Allamakee Community School District and St. Patrick Catholic School are working together with the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative to get the Walking School Bus ready for take-off in April.
NIFF organizers say the community plays a big role in the success of Walking School Buses since volunteers are needed to act as supervisors for the Walking School Bus. From parents to grandparents to retirees and beyond, community members are essential. Christensen works closely with schools and communities to enable and encourage students to safely walk and bicycle to and from school. The Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative (www.iowafoodandfitness.org) promotes healthy, locally grown food and active living and play throughout northeast Iowa.
