Many yard and boulevard trees are damaged each year by lawn mowers and lawn trimming devices. Scraping the bark from the tree near its base causes damage to the capillaries that deliver sap to the tree and exposes the tree to disease. This can be easily avoided by placing mulch around the tree three to five inches deep and out about six inches from the tree, then spraying the mulch occasionally with ‘Round-up” to keep the grass from growing up through the mulch.
The City of Waukon maintains a large supply of mulch on the north side of the yard waste area at the fairgrounds.  This mulch is free for residents to use to prevent damage to trees and simplify trimming around yard trees and shrubs.
