VMH capital improvement needs; New roof and revamping of ER visualized showing necessity for City to County conversion

Proposed capital improvements to include revamped ER space at VMH ... Converting Veterans Memorial Hospital to a county hospital will allow for county tax appropriations to help ensure long-term sustainability of the hospital to make some much needed capital improvements. Pictured here are five members of the hospital ER staff pictured in one of the two ER rooms at the hospital, showing the small size of the rooms which are lacking privacy and room for equipment, storage and to perform needed procedures. Pictured above, left to right, is Teresa Schaefers, RN, ER Nurse; Dylan Farning, EMT, ER Tech; Jacob Dougherty, Paramedic, EMS Supervisor; Seth Bulman, Paramedic; and Cheryl Livingston, Paramedic. Submitted photo.

The Allamakee County vote to determine if Veterans Memorial Hospital converts from a city-owned hospital to a county-owned hospital is included in the general election November 8. Converting to a county hospital will allow for County tax appropriations to help ensure long-term sustainability of the hospital to make some much needed capital improvements.

“The main goal of this conversion is to make sure Veterans Memorial is here for the community for the long term,” stated Michael Coyle, CEO of Veterans Memorial Hospital. “To do that, we need additional resources not only to retain our inpatient services, but to expand them and have the funds to keep the 70-plus year old building up to code.”

The hospital’s roofs are in great need of being replaced and will be a top priority with County tax appropriations if the vote is passed.

What's Up at the USDA Office?

Upcoming Deadlines/Dates
December 5: Last day to return COC ballots
December 9: Dairy Margin Coverage Program
December 15: Crop Reporting for Fall-Seeded Small Grains

Next Season starts this Fall
by LuAnn Rolling, District Conservationist
Fall is the time to start implementing practices for next year’s crop.  Just because temperatures are cooler and grain is harvested it is not time to just “let things sit”.  In order to best prepare for the 2023 crop producers should be concerned with keeping the water, nutrient and carbon cycles functioning as long as possible.

Dairy producers can now enroll for 2023 signup for Dairy Margin Coverage

Dairy producers can now enroll for 2023 coverage through the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) Program, an important safety net program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that helps producers manage changes in milk and feed prices. Last year, USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) took steps to improve coverage, especially for small- and mid-sized dairies, including offering a new Supplemental DMC program and updating its feed cost formula to better address retroactive, current and future feed costs. These changes continue to support producers through this year’s signup, which ends Dec. 9, 2022.
