Linus “L” Liddle

Linus “L” Lavel Liddle, age 78, died unexpectedly July 18, 2022 at home of natural causes. A visitation and service was held Monday, July 25 at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria, VA. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to At Home in Alexandria or the charity of your choice.

L was born May 18, 1944 in Fairbank. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul DeWitt Liddle and Ruth Geneva (Mork) Liddle; and his sister, Sonya Karlene (Liddle) Christianson, all of Iowa. L attended both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. He was a 1962 graduate of Waukon High School.

He had a career with the federal government and worked in the (then) Civil Service Commission, the Bureau of the Census, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). He met his wife, Ann, at the Census Bureau and they were married March 16, 1974. L retired in 1995 (as did Ann). They enjoyed many years of retirement and travel and tried to stay out of each other’s way.

Mary (Howes) Flottmeyer

Our mother, Mary Catherine (Howes) Flottmeyer, 91, of La Crosse, WI died July 6, 2022 surrounded by her children and loved ones at Eagle Crest South in La Crosse. Funeral mass was held at Blessed Sacrament Church, La Crosse July 12, with Rev. Brian D. Konopa officiating. Burial took place in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Marilyn Meyer

Marilyn Claudette Meyer, 84, of Castalia died Monday, July 25, 2022 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. Funeral Service was held Saturday, July 30 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia with Daryl Schultz serving as the officiant. Burial followed the service at Pleasant View Cemetery in Castalia.

Marilyn was born April 24, 1938 to Beulah Bray in Postville. She graduated from Postville High School in 1956.

Marilyn was united in marriage with Roy Ellis in 1957. Three children were born to this union. They later divorced. Marilyn was united in marriage to Roland Meyer in 1967. One child was born to this union. They later divorced.

Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation receives Model A car proceeds ...

The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation was recently gifted a 1930 Model A car by Dr. Richard Hermeier of Waukon. Adam Hooten of Teddy’s Auto Sales donated his time and effort in the sale of the car on behalf of the Foundation. A total of $13,850 was received for the sale of the car, which was then gifted to the hospital Foundation. Free chair massages at Waukon Corn Days


Massage therapy at Veterans Memorial Hospital ... Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering free chair massages at the Waukon Corn Days celebration Thursday, August 4. Shannon Bernatz, Licensed Massage Therapist, pictured above, is a full-time massage therapist at Veterans Memorial Hospital and will be offering free chair massages at the event from 4:30-7:30 p.m. She joins part-time therapist Vicki Klepper in making massage therapy available to area communities five days a week with more expanded hours. Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering free chair massages at the Waukon Corn Days celebration Thursday, August 4. Veterans Memorial Hospital recently expanded its massage therapy hours allowing services and scheduling to be more readily available. The benefits of massage therapy include decreasing anxiety, enhancing sleep, increasing energy, improving circulation, improving concentration and reducing fatigue among others. The types of massage offered at the hospital have also expanded and include Swedish Massage, Heated Stones,  Sports Massage, Compassionate Touch, Reflexology, Pregnancy Massage and Cupping Therapy.

Make appointments for August Vaccination Clinics; Free test kits and masks available

Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care/Allamakee County Public Health will continue to offer all doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at their weekly immunization clinics each Wednesday throughout the month of August. These vaccinations are by appointment only. To make an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccination, in August and beyond, call Veterans Memorial Hospital Community and Home Care at 563-568-5660.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Be sure to wear a mask and bring an insurance card and vaccination card if coming for a second or booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Since Veterans Memorial Hospital is a health care facility, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) does require that masks are still to be worn by every patient and visitor to the hospital.

Blood Donor Day scheduled; “Tackling” blood shortages

The next LifeServe Blood Center blood drive will be held Monday, August 1 from 12-5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in south Waukon. Due to a current blood shortage, the LifeServe Blood Center is offering an incentive to help “tackle” the blood shortage. Everyone who donates blood the month of August will be entered into a drawing to win a “Tackling the blood Shortage” prize package. The winner will be drawn August 30.

William and Ellen Manton Family Reunion August 6

A family reunion will be held for the families of William and Ellen Manton Saturday, August 6 at the Wexford Hall. A luncheon will be held from 1-5 p.m.

The Manton ancestors came from Ireland in the 1850s. The Manton family included Mary, Sister M. Ramona, Catherine, Joseph, Martin, Thomas and William. All descendants are cordially invited to attend this family reunion.

When Life is Scary

We live in troubled times. We are constantly confronted by headlines of war, fears of disease, concern over the economy, the dangers of violence in our cities and streets, and many other issues.

This is not the first time in history that nations have faced such challenging times. Thankfully, the Bible not only records that fact, but also gives us hope and assurance to face those times. To find that hope means learning the truths that the Bible tells us about uncertain times.
