The Lansing VFW Auxiliary Post #5981 and the New Albin VFW Auxiliary Post #5603 recently sponsored their annual Patriotic Essay Contest. High school students graduating in spring of 2022 are encouraged to apply for Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s (IFBF) $2,500 scholarship, awarded to 27 eligible Iowa high school seniors and renewable for four years, up to $10,000.

“Iowa leads the nation in agricultural production, and that is because of the innovation and strong work ethic of emerging young leaders,” says IFBF President Brent Johnson. “Iowa Farm Bureau is proud to award nearly $500,000 in annual scholarships to these students whose agricultural knowledge will strengthen the industry and Iowa’s rural communities.”

The Allamakee Music Boosters will be holding their Annual Prom Dress Sale this Friday, February 4, from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday, February 5, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Waukon Banquet Center. This sale welcomes gently used prom and semi-formal dresses to be offered for resale, allowing shoppers an alternative to buying new dresses at higher prices.

Prom and semi-formal dresses can be dropped off Thursday, February 3 from 6-8 p.m. and again Friday, February 4 from 4-6 p.m.  Consignors are charged $5 for each dress they wish to sell, and they can set their own price on each dress they want to sell.

For each dress that sells, the consignor receives the price they set on their dress less a 10% commission that is given to the Allamakee Music Boosters for coordinating this event. Anyone in the tri-state area is welcome to attend this event for consigning dresses, shopping for a dress or both.

The Retreat United Methodist Church Knitting Club from De Soto, WI recently crafted and donated a variety of prayer shawls (some of which are pictured at left) for residents at Thornton Manor in Lansing. The Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter is offering a free virtual education series to kick off the new year. The programs are available to help those living with Alzheimer’s and their families understand what to expect so they can be prepared to meet the changes ahead and live well for as long as possible.

The topics covered will range from what changes to expect from a loved one in the different stages of the disease, to legal and financial issues to consider, to new advancements in Alzheimer’s research.

Each virtual education program will be held over Zoom and allows the audience to ask questions and engage with others with an Alzheimer’s journey. The remaining schedule of programs includes:

• Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers: Middle Stage - February 9, 3:30-5 p.m.
• Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers: Late Stage - February 16, 3:30-5 p.m.

The Kee girls basketball team picked up just one win in three games played this past week, but came well within striking distance of putting all three of those games in the win column. Beginning the week with a 38-35 home loss to MFL/MarMac Tuesday, January 25, the Lady Hawks then posted a 65-37 win at Postville Thursday, January 27 in a game rescheduled from January 18 before falling in another close battle at North Fayette Valley Friday, January 28 by a 52-47 end result.

Junior Jakob Regan crowned NEIC individual champion at 126 pounds

The Waukon wrestling team wrapped up its regular season this past week with one final dual event and a tournament. That final dual event proved to the mat Tribe’s best of the season as the Indians won two of four dual meets wrestled that night, defeating both Postville, 48-27, and Clayton Ridge, 60-4, while also falling to MFL/MarMac, 60-24, and to Nashua-Plainfield, 78-3. The Indians also wrestled in the annual Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Tournament Saturday, January 29 at New Hampton, finishing fourth in the final team standings and crowning their first NEIC Champion in over 15 seasons in junior 126-pounder Jakob Regan.

The Indians will now begin their postseason journey Saturday, February 5 at their Class 2A Sectional 9 Tournament at Crestwood High School in Cresco.

The Kee boys basketball team played through a winless week, falling in a pair of Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) contests to teams lying in front of the Hawks’ current middle-of-the-pack ranking in the current UIC standings. The Kee boys first came close to reversing an earlier fortune against the only team still unbeaten in UIC play, coming up just short, 51-49, at home against MFL/MarMac Tuesday, January 25, and then suffered a differing trend in falling harder to a North Fayette Valley squad they had fallen to by just a point a couple weeks earlier, being dealt a 66-54 loss in West Union Friday, January 28.

The Waukon boys basketball team played through a busy week, starting off this past week by extending a newfound winning streak to four games before having that streak ended and starting one in the opposite direction, but only by narrow end results. The Indians opened the week with a 61-53 win at Crestwood Tuesday, January 25 but then fell in back-to-back road games, 55-52 at Spring Grove, MN Thursday, January 27 and by a 56-53 final in overtime at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, January 28.

Deputy John L. Grampovnik, 51, of Waukon died Thursday, January 27, 2022 at University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, February 3 at 11 a.m. at Iron Ridge Church in Waukon. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 2 at Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon.
