The game featured the Wartburg Knights hosting the Coe College Kohawks, both of which have several Waukon football alumni listed on their respective rosters this season. The band will continue to perform at halftime for the remaining home games for the Waukon High School football team, as well as perform at the Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA) State Marching Band Festival this Saturday, October 9. Retired dentist Bruce Carlson is hosting “Celebrate Lansing” as a thank you to the community for years of loyal support

Thanking the community ... Dr. Bruce Carlson, who retired this past year from his long-time dentistry practice in Lansing, is pictured above with a patient from “quite some time ago.” As a way of showing his appreciation to Lansing and the surrounding community for supporting him for his 42-year career in the little river town, Dr. Carlson is hosting a “Celebrate Lansing” event this Saturday, October 9. Submitted photo.

Free event scheduled for this Saturday to feature food and live music

by Julie Berg-Raymond

Long-time Lansing dentist Bruce Carlson, who retired last year, is throwing a party - and everyone is invited.

As a way of saying “thank you” for 42 years of patronage - “I’m thanking the community for kind of putting up with me,” he says - Carlson is hosting “Celebrate Lansing” this Saturday, October 9, from 1-6 p.m., at the Lansing Sports Complex. There is no admission charge for the event, which includes live music (Freaks of Nature performs at 1 p.m., followed by Joe and Vicki Price) and on-site food vendors. Bringing him down ... Waukon football juniors Evan O’Neill (#2 at right) and Milan Byrnes (#53 at left) combine their efforts to bring down this Dubuque Wahlert ballcarrier in the Indians’ 64-21 home victory over the Golden Eagles Friday, October 1. Both Byrnes and O’Neill wrapped up one each of solo and assisted tackles, with O’Neill also catching a late touchdown pass of 53 yards for the grid Tribe. It’s a good thing Waukon Indian football coach Chad Beermann does not award game balls to deserving players as there would not have been enough for everyone Friday, October 1 after his team beat visiting Dubuque Wahlert, 64-21. The Indians amassed over 700 yards of offense including 406 yards on the ground and 296 yards in the passing game. Those 64 points were the most scored by the grid Tribe since a 66-0 victory over Anamosa in 2019 as Waukon improved to 5-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in District play.

“The offensive line did a great job of blocking,” said the Indian head coach. “And then Wahlert really struggled in tackling our backs in the open field. Pat (Hennessy) and Lincoln (Snitker) really carried the load with each accounting for over 240 yards of offense apiece.”

Kee football team comes back from early deficit to remain undefeated with 46-38 triumph at Edgewood-Colesburg

by Perry Hesse

Lopsided wins are always welcome for a coach but can also leave them wondering how their team will react in a tight game that might come down to the final possession. Having outscored five previous opponents by a 280-47 result so far this season, Kee football head coach Chad Winters found out a lot about his team Friday night, October 1 after a wild 46-38 victory at Edgwood-Colesburg (Ed-Co), keeping the Hawks undefeated with a 6-0 record.

“For the fans, it was a heck of a football game to watch as there were some great athletes on both teams that made some big-time plays,” said Coach Winters. “It was a nightmare start as we fumbled on our first play from scrimmage and it was returned for a touchdown. We also fumbled the exchange on our next possession and were trailing, 12-0, before we knew what hit us. Give credit to our kids as they kept their cool and battled back.”

Waukon volleyball team sweeps MFL/MarMac, nearly upsets Class 4A ranked Decorah, battles hard at Columbus Tourney

Pounding out a “Think Pink” point ... Waukon volleyball junior McKenzie Lier hammers down a kill in the Indians’ five-set near-upset of Class 4A 14th-rated Decorah at home Tuesday, September 28. Perhaps inspired by her own mother’s recent battle with breast cancer (see Pages 19-22) on this “Think Pink” Night in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, Lier swatted out three kills and recorded two each of solo blocks, assisted blocks and digs in the match. View and find out how to purchase this photo and many more by clicking on the Photo Galleries link on this webpage.

The Waukon volleyball team played through one of its busiest weeks of the season, with that busyness both starting and ending the week. The net Tribe hosted a pair of matches on back-to-back nights to start the week, recording outcomes on differing ends of the spectrum with a home sweep of MFL/MarMac in three sets, 27-25, 25-9 and 25-14, Monday, September 27 before battling Class 4A 14th-rated Decorah to the very brink of an upset Tuesday, September 28, taking the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21 before having the final three get away from them, 18-25, 19-25 and 11-15.
