Honoring those who have served as Veterans Day approaches

by Lissa Blake

Although Sergeant Eddie Frick isn’t someone who likes to draw attention to himself, his wife, Karen, thought it was time to honor him for his service to his country.

So with Veterans Day approaching, she encouraged him to share the story of how he has juggled being a busy family man with serving his country over the past 18 years.

“He is so reserved. I just think he deserves some recognition for everything he’s done,” said his wife, the former Karen Egan, of 15 years.

Eddie Frick is the son of Roger and Susan Frick of Waukon and a 2000 graduate of Waukon High School. He started dating Karen, the daughter of John and Deb Egan of rural Luana, when they were still attending Waukon High School.

Waukon High School Drama Department to present “GOOD NEWS!” as this year’s musical on stage November 7, 9 & 10

The Waukon High School Drama Department will present “GOOD NEWS!” as this year’s musical production this Thursday and Saturday, November 7 and 9 at 7 p.m. on the auditorium stage at Waukon High School, and again at 1 p.m. Sunday, November 10, so as not to conflict with the November 8 second-round play-off game for the Waukon football team.

It is only fitting that the production’s schedule be adjusted for the football team as “GOOD NEWS!” is about a college football team in the 1920s. The roaring ‘20s are in full swing on the campus of Tait College. Anticipation builds on the campus as game day nears but the football hero, Tom Marlow (played by Ethan Hooten), must first pass a big Astronomy exam in order to play. When he unexpectedly falls for his tutor, Connie Lane (played by Oonagh Ahouse), romance blooms. With songs like “You’re the Cream in My Coffee,” “Button Up Your Overcoat,” and “Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries,” this show is fun for everyone.

ISU Extension hosts “What’s on Your Plate?” at New Albin Elementary ...

Second graders at New Albin Elementary School learned about MyPlate and the five food groups at a recent presentation by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. They studied the lunch menu and learned all five food groups are served daily. While digging deeper, they learned about eating the rainbow and why phytochemicals (what gives food its color) are so good for those who eat them. While matching sugar cubes to the correct food, students gained a visual of how much sugar they are consuming, versus how much they should limit themselves to. Each lesson ended with a local food taste test.

These taste testers tried zucchini chips, sweet potato waffles, fresh mangos, cranberries, and cut up their own kiwis. For more information about joining 4-H, contact Becky Rea, Allamakee County K-12 Program Coordinator at the Iowa State Extension and Outreach Allamakee County Office at 563-568-6345.
