Event at Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center celebrates Capturing the Beauty of Iowa’s Natural Areas Through Art Project


Nature and art celebrated at Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center ... As part of an August 6 event held at the Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center in Lansing celebrating the Capturing the Beauty of Iowa’s Natural Areas Through Art Project, the Allamakee County Conservation Board (ACCB) accepted a painting entitled “Lansing from the Driftless Center” from Decorah artist Mary Ann Gloe. Over two dozen people gathered Tuesday, August 6 at the Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center in Lansing to celebrate the development of a new original water color painting that depicts the view from the Visitor Center, as well as the release of new posters and postcards that were developed by Northeast Iowa RC&D from the painting. The painting is the artwork of Decorah artist Mary Ann Gloe, and the posters and postcards based on that painting are available at the Driftless Area Education & Visitor Center Gift Shop.

Jacquelyn Radloff

Jacquelyn Kay Radloff, 70, of Monona died Friday, August 9, 2019 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral Service was held Thursday, August 15 at Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Monona with Rev. Deb Parkison as the officiant. Burial followed at Monona Cemetery, Monona. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Jacquelyn Kay was born December 28, 1948 to Wilbert and Gretchen (Henderson) Wiethorn. She graduated from MFL High School in 1967.

Jacquelyn was united in marriage with Loren Radloff November 25, 1967 at United Methodist Church in Monona. She was a very devoted, loving wife and dedicated to her family. Four children were born to this union. Jacque and Loren farmed together for many years until all the kids were in school, then she began working at Gencor-Bituma in the Accounting department. She later went to work as the City Clerk for Monona until she retired in 2015.

Norbert Lembke

Norbert George Lembke, 92, of Monona died Monday, August 12, 2019 at his home in Monona. Funeral Service was held Saturday, August 17 at Faith Lutheran Church in Monona with Rev. Mel Harris as the officiant. Burial followed at Monona Cemetery.

Norbert was born May 6, 1927 to Erwin and Mildred (Sass) Lembke in Monona Township. He was baptized June 22, 1927 by Rev. Daugs and confirmed in 1941 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. He graduated from Monona High School and attended one year of college.

Norbert was united in marriage with Eileen Schrader October 16, 1951 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana. Five children were born to this union. Norbert worked a few years for the Monona Coop and also farmed. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and listening and dancing to Polka Music. He loved spending time with his family.

June Capper

June Capper, 88, of Lansing, formerly of Elgin, died Friday, August 16, 2019 at Thornton Manor, Lansing. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 24 at 1 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin with visitation from 12-1 p.m. before services at the funeral home Saturday. Burial will follow at Elgin Cemetery, Elgin.

Mike and Frannie Decker of Waukon, parents of the bride-to-be, and Tim and Jill Heiderscheit of New Albin, parents of the groom-to-be, wish to announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of Erin Decker of Waukon and Coady Heiderscheit of New Albin. The wedding will take place September 7, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin.

The bride-to-be is a 2011 graduate of Waukon High School and a 2015 graduate of Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and is employed as a Registered Nurse on the Surgical and Digestive Care Unit at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI

The groom-to-be is a 2010 graduate of Kee High School and a 2012 graduate of Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Water Environmental Technology and is employed by PeopleService in Lansing as a Water and Wastewater Treatment Operator.

Bernice Walleser 90th birthday

Bernice Walleser of Lansing will be celebrating her 90th birthday. An open house hosted by her children will take place Saturday, August 17 from 2-4 p.m. at Thornton Manor in Lansing with cake and ice cream being served.

Birth announcement: Deason

Paul and Lindsey Deason of Harpers Ferry announce the birth of their son, William Paul Deason, born July 31, 2019 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 8 lbs. 5 ozs. and measured 21 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins siblings, Kaylin (6), Mitchell (4) and Nicholas (1-1/2).

Grandparents are Steve Deason of Cedar Rapids, Chris Deason of Cedar Rapids, Jeff and Andrea Mitchell of Waterville and Pam Mitchell of Waukon. Great-grandparents are Sue Freese of Waukon, Ray and Lorraine Mitchell of Rossville and Myrtle Gilbert of Cedar Rapids.

Learn how to “Stop the Bleed” plus free blood sugar diabetes tests and blood pressure checks in VMH’s First Aid Tent at Waukon Corn Days

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering free Blood Sugar Testing and Blood Pressure checks with immediate results at the Waukon Corn Day celebration Friday, August 16.  The tests will be performed by Veterans Memorial Hospital staff, in the Veterans Memorial Hospital first aid tent located at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds from 4:30-8:00 p.m. Both of these checks take just a few seconds to perform and are free of charge.

Veterans Memorial Hospital will also be offering hands on “Stop the Bleed Training” that will be offered the entire evening.  Adults and children will learn how to quickly stop a life-threatening bleed by packing a puncture wound or laceration, then applying pressure, and even learn how to safely apply a tourniquet for heavy bleeds.  A booklet will also be handed out giving step by step instructions to all those who pass by. Participation prizes will be awarded for the training.

Family Fun Run/Walk with optional 5K during Waukon Corn Days; A free event

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be sponsoring their annual 5K Cardiac Classic Run/Walk Saturday, August 17, in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. Again this year, the event welcomes a shorter 1.5 mile walking route with an optional 5K (3.1 route) to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate.

The event will begin and end at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon at 8 a.m. with registration beginning at 7 a.m. This is a free wellness event for all ages. New this year, costumes are encouraged to be worn at this event by adults and youth with the top costume in both categories earning a prize!
