Problem trees replaced at World War I Memorial

For a variety of reasons, the white pine trees planted as part of the World War I Memorial in Mt. Hosmer Park have struggled, unsuccessfully, to thrive. Two of the original six died and were replaced last year and, according to Bob Teff, a member of the Memorial committee, two more were dying and needed replaced this year. Deer, drought, and neighboring walnut trees were contributing factors to the trees' demise.

Lansing Public High School 50th Reunion

The Lansing Public High School Class of 1956 celebrated their 50 year class reunion May 27, 2006. They began the day being honored at the annual alumni potluck at the Methodist Church at noon. A wonderful afternoon was spent at Wanda (Strong) & John Hisel's home visiting and reminiscing. As has been the custom every 5 years since graduating, we met at Clancy's for dinner.

Dateline: Lansing, Iowa, February 23, 1864

It's 1864 in Lansing, Iowa. Dr. J. I. Taylor, Physician and Surgeon, has his offices on Main Street, one door above the Post Office. Robinson's sold coffins "priced to suit the times." The Lansing Brewery, Haas & Kerndt, Proprietors, advertised that "Fresh Brewer's Yeast and Eastern Hops" were constantly on hand and they would supply dealers with any quantity of beer, delivered to order.

Ben Luster on the Journey of Hope

Ben Luster of East Lansing, Michigan, embarked on a 4,000 mile journey across the country with 70 members of the fraternity Pi Kappa Phi for the Journey of Hope program, a cross-country cycling event winch raises funds and awareness for people with disabilities. Push America, an organization established by Pi Kappa Phi sponsors the Journey of Hope program.

Luster began biking from San Francisco, CA, on June 10, 2006, and is scheduled to be in Washington, D.C., on August 12, 2006.

Second Annual Harpers Ferry Days set for August 18 and 19

Plans for the Second Annual Harpers Ferry Days are well underway. With nearly 2,000 people in attendance last year, the planning committee of nearly 30 volunteers hope to exceed the attendance this year with their line up of fun things to do. The event is scheduled for the weekend of Friday and Saturday, August 18 and 19.

Auditions for New Minowa Players' musical, "Quilters", Friday, Saturday
Auditions will be held for the musical "Quilters", the New Minowa Players fall show, this Friday, Aug. 4 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the NMP Building located at 906 S. Mill in Decorah.

Athlete of the Week

Callie Adam part of 2006 Iowa Shrine Bowl

While most Midwesterners were trying to beat the July heat, Callie Adam was putting in four hours a day of cheer practice in preparation for the 2006 Iowa Shrine Bowl. Adam, who's the daughter of Bill and Cheryl Adam of Waukon and entering her senior year at Waukon Senior High, joined her talents with those of dozens of other Iowa cheerleaders for the July 22 football game at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.

Actually, Adam mentioned, the heat wasn't bad for the Saturday night game. "We had some really hot practices, but game day was really nice," she noted.
