Helen M. Schneider, 93, of Waukon died Monday, November 3, 2014 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 6 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Grant VanderVelden officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, November 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Helen Mildred Schneider was born August 5, 1921 in Center Township, rural Lansing, the daughter of Herbert and Selma (Marti) Hartong. She was baptized and confirmed at Lansing Ridge Congregational Church in Churchtown and she attended rural country schools. Helen worked at Kaveny’s Gift Shop in Waukon for a couple of years.
June 6, 1946, she married Lloyd "Pony" Schneider at Lansing Ridge Congregational Church. They farmed together in Makee Township. Lloyd died June 21, 1965. After his death, Helen worked several places, including Quandahl’s Food Ranch, where she worked for 24 years. She stayed on the farm until 1994 and then moved to Waukon.
Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, taught Sunday school, was a youth sponsor, and was active in the Ruth Circle of the Presbyterian Women and on the kitchen committee. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, doing yard work and crafts, and having coffee with friends.
Survivors include her children, Jay Schneider of Waukon and Lori (Bruce) Bruns of Nashua; three grandchildren, Kevin Schneider, Brady (Amy) Bruns and Daley Bruns; three great-grandchildren, Brandi and Brandon Schneider and Brylee Bruns; and a sister-in-law, Judy Hartong of Lansing. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd; a sister, Lorraine Yund; and a brother, Dale Hartong.
