Orville Dean Duvel was born June 27, 1935 at his home in rural Postville, the son of Albert and Minnie (Klein) Duvel. He was baptized October 6, 1935 and confirmed April 10, 1949 at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon. Orville attended country school at Ludlow #4 and then went to work for area farmers.
June 3, 1955, he married Laura Jane Bruckner at Salem United Church of Christ. In 1958, he started working at the Hygrade meat processing plant in Postville and worked there for 15 years. In 1961, Orville started farming for himself, raising crops, hogs, chickens, and for a while milking 130 cows. For 20 years, Orville and Laura would spend the winters at Gulf Shore State Park in Alabama.
He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon and held fish fries there. Orville absolutely loved fishing and also enjoyed hunting raccoons, squirrels and mushrooms. He liked tinkering and could fix anything. He loved to spend time with family and friends and taught his kids and grandkids how to play cards so he’d always have someone to play with. He and Laura also liked to go to the Wellness Center in Waukon and made many good friends there. Orville will be remembered as a good and humble man with a great wit who only boasted about his fishing.
Orville is survived by his wife, Laura, of Postville; his children, Brenda (Mark) Fredrickson of Grafton, and Ronald (Patti) and Charles (Lorna) Duvel, both of Postville; 14 grandchildren, Jeremy (Brenda) Duvel, Lori (Aaron) Hickling, Jenny (Mick) Johnson,  Tony (Deirdre) Duvel, Sabrina Duvel, Jesse (Iwona) Lewter, Reggie Duvel, Sara (John) Olsen, Christen (Nate) Duvel-Hughes, Jenni Hemesath, Jess (Steve) Krob, Averell Jensen, Erena (Gary) Wagner and Araylla (Jesse) Hennigar; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ervin, Lloyd (Laura) and Norman (Gloria) Duvel; two sisters, Arlene (Robert) Kugel and Margaret (Vernon) Kruger; his son, Donald Edward Duvel; his daughter, Connie Jean Duvel; a grandson-in-law, Scott Sawyer; and a grandchild, Harley Allen Jensen.
