Gladys Viola Flage was born July 17, 1917 in Waterville, the daughter of Albert G. and Karen M. (Leyse) Hagen. Her family and involvement at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church laid a foundation for her Christian faith. Gladys graduated from Waterville High School and Waukon Junior College. She taught elementary school in the Waukon area for several years.
She married David Benjamin Flage August 4, 1940 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. Together they farmed in Ludlow Township for 40 years before moving to Waukon in 1989. Over the years she found great fulfillment in serving alongside her Zalmona church family.
Her greatest joy was being with family and she treasured the times when children and grandchildren gathered together. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, David, including special trips to Germany. Music was a means to “light up her life.” She enjoyed flower gardening. In her later years when she was dependent on care from others, she consistently displayed a sweet spirit of thankfulness and joy, evidence of her faith and trust in Christ as Savior.
Survivors include her children, Ruth (Milt) Nolting of Spirit Lake, Carol (Neil) Middleton of Rockford, IL, David J. Flage of Waterloo, Mark Flage of Athens, GA, Sharon (Kim) Pagel of Cedar Rapids and Steve (Jerri Dee) Flage of Algonquin, IL; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Jean Hagen. She was preceded in death by her husband. David; a grandson, Lars Middleton; three brothers, Grant, Leonard, and Walter Hagen; and two sisters, Mabel Simmons and Cora Beegel.
Psalm 116:15 - Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful servant.
