Tuesday, February 24, four members from the Little Switzerland FFA Chapter at Waukon High School traveled to Guttenberg to compete at Sub-District Contest, with four other chapter members attending in support of their efforts.
Chase Pladsen received a Gold rating in Ag Broadcasting, a contest used to understand and spark interest in the field of broadcast journalism. Members competing in this contest prepare a five-minute broadcast, including a commercial, about an agricultural subject. Members competing in this event will be evaluated and judged on news presentation and events, delivery and the commercial.
Christa Heffern participated in Public Speaking, receiving a Gold rating and earning advancement to the District Contest scheduled for March 14. Public Speaking is a Career Development Event (CDE) that is designed to improve rural and agricultural leadership, to propose participation in public speaking events, and to stimulate interest along such lines. Participates in this contest are to prepare a speech about a desired subject in agriculture, these subjects can vary from Agri-Business to Agriscience and technology. The participants must then present their speech in front of a panel of judges and will be judged on contents of the speech, stage presence, power of expression, etc.
Elizabeth Blake received a silver rating in individual Ag Sales, a CDE used to help FFA members develop skills and techniques used to become an effective salesperson of agricultural products. Individuals must pick an agricultural product to sell and must also prepare a sales pitch. Individuals competing in this contest are able to present with material that helps sell their items, such as business cards, brochures, and the actual product. They will be judged on product sheet, presentation and product knowledge.
Dani Stock placed second and is advancing to district contest in the FFA Greenhand Quiz, which is used to test first-year FFA members on general knowledge of the National FFA Organization. Questions on the quiz will range from when FFA was established to the current National FFA President.
