Rick D. Smith, 66, of Waukon died Friday, March 13, 2015 at his home in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 17 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
Roderick Dale Smith was born August 10, 1948 in New Albin, the son of Kenneth William and Lyla Vivian (Solberg) Smith. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, MN and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon.
Rick graduated from Waukon High School in 1968. He served in the United States Air Force from 1969 until he retired in 1989 as a Tech Sergeant. July 20, 1996 he married Theresa Ryan at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah. He worked at Deco Products in Decorah for many years.
Rick was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, working jig saw puzzles, fishing, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa, of Waukon; a son, Brent, of Waukon; a step-son, Chris Halweg, and his wife, Gretchen Feulner, of Raleigh, NC; two step-grandchildren, Lucian and Julian Halweg; three sisters, Karen (Larry) Donahue of New Albin, Sue Freese of Waukon and Peggy (Jim) Wilson of Prairie du Chien, WI; four brothers, Dennis (Cindy) Smith of Marquette, and Randy (Pam) Smith, Fred (Geralyn) Smith and Greg (Kristie) Smith, all of Waukon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronald Smith; two sisters, Patty Gilman and Linda Sires; an infant brother; an infant sister; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and Evelyn Ryan; two brothers-in-law, Roger Freese and Kenneth Kamp; and a great nephew, Justin Cahoon.
Honorary casketbearers were Rick’s brothers and sisters, Juan and Ursula Herrero, and Bob and Teresa De Coste. Casketbearers were Heath, Ryan, Cameron and Gavin Smith, Travis Nierling, Mike and Loren Mitchell and Jared Donahue.
