Virginia "Ginny" Halverson
Virginia M. “Ginny” Halverson, 88, of Waukon passed away Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 2 at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville, with Rev. Tom Buresh as the officiant. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 2 at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville. Inurnment will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Virginia Maxine, the daughter of Alfred and Nellie (Livingood) Winter, was born September 9, 1926 on a farm in Ludlow Township, rural Postville. She attended country school and Waukon High School for one year before graduating from Postville High School in 1944. Virginia was united in marriage with Lynn Halverson June 2, 1944 at Zion Reform Church in Waukon. To this union 14 children, seven daughters and seven sons, were born.
Lynn and Virginia purchased her family’s farm, which had been in the Livingood family for over one hundred years, in 1955. She helped work the farm and raised her family. She also worked at Northern Engraving in Waukon for six years. Virginia enjoyed baking, cooking, canning, sewing and crocheting. She was a chairperson for the Allamakee County Republican Women and was active in the Republican Party. She was a longtime member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville, and served on several committees.
Virginia was the coordinator of the butter and cheese giveaway, covering 16 different sites in Allamakee County. She received the Governor’s Volunteer Recognition Award with a ceremony held in Des Moines. Virginia was also a member of V.F.W. Auxiliary #4117 in Waukon.
Virginia is survived by seven daughters: Gloria Dertinger of Marion, Susan Hangartner of Loveland, CO, Sherry (Dean) Bechtel of Monona, Bonnie (Ken) Iseli of Vero Beach, FL, Gail (Jim) Connor of Onalaska, WI, Kim (Kevin) Honn of Center Point and June Brandsmeier of La Crosse, WI; four sons, James (Julie) Halverson of Monona, Jerry Halverson of Waukon, Lynn (Sally) Halverson of Orlando, FL and Alfred (Sandra) Halverson of Waukon; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Janice Winter and Marilyn Winter of Waukon; and one brother-in-law, Calvin Shindoll of Waukon.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn; three sons, Jay, Scot and Tony; three granddaughters, Chanda, Carrie and Sara; four brothers, Gilbert, who died in infancy, Calvin, Edwin and Cletus; one sister, Maggie Shindoll; and a son-in-law, Donald Hangartner.
Honorary pallbearers are Jay and Scot Halverson. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Postville is assisting the family with the arrangements.
