Jerry Custer

Jerry D. Custer, 76, of Lansing, formerly of Davenport, died Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, October 14 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Deacon Pat Malanaphy officiating. Friends may call one hour before the services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Crossing Rivers Hospice or to the family.
Jerry David Custer was born to Raymond and Helen (Potwin) Custer in Charles City July 25, 1939. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1957. Jerry married Jackie Oelberg in 1959, and they were later divorced. He then married Sandra Freeman in 1973, and they were also later divorced.
Jerry attended the University of Northern Iowa for one year, and then became a pattern maker for John Deere, where he earned his Journeyman license. After more than 12 years as a pattern maker, Jerry started his own State Farm Insurance practice in Davenport at which he worked for nearly 31 years before retiring. February 15, 1986, Jerry married Jackie Mooney.
Jerry was a charismatic outdoorsman, known for his sense of humor. He was in his element when hunting or fishing. Jerry excelled and took great pride in his work, whether it was building his own home or building a leading insurance practice.
Jerry is survived by Jackie, his wife of almost 30 years; his children: Kelly Jo Custer of Fort Collins, CO, Wendy Lynn Chambers of Statesboro, GA, Jeffrey David Custer of Franklin, TN and Lindsay Custer of Shoreline, WA; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one stepdaughter, Karen Hahn of Casa Grande, AZ; one stepson, Brian Lee Athey of Davenport; and a brother, Keith Custer of Dunkerton.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents; one son, Robert Freeman Custer; and one stepson, Scott Mooney.
