After being denied a third consecutive State Play-Off qualification last season, the Waukon football team has played its way back to the postseason, clinching that reservation with a 44-17 triumph over Center Point-Urbana (CPU) to wrap up the Tribe’s home regular season schedule Friday, October 16. In a bit of gridiron justice, the play-off securing win over the Stormin’ Pointers comes after CPU had denied that Indian quest of continuing its play-off qualification streak last season with a 27-20 loss that went down to the final moments of play.
The victory improves the Indians to a 7-1 overall record that bettered to a 4-1 mark in Class 2A District 3 play to remain in a three-way tie atop the District 3 standings after Dyersville Beckman defeated New Hampton, 21-13, and North Fayette Valley blasted winless Columbus, 61-21. The football Tribe will wrap up its regular season this Friday, October 23 by traveling to Oelwein. The Huskies have just one win on the season, over Columbus, and come off a 14-6 non-district loss at Benton this past Friday, October 16.
The Class 2A State Play-Off pairings will be determined following Friday’s games. The Indians currently sit as Class 2A District 3’s number-three seed out of four qualifying teams, but Friday’s results could shake those seedings up considerably. See the shaded box on Page 10A for further play-off scenarios for the Indians entering into Friday’s game.
