Waukon football team to host Union in first-round State Play-Off game Wednesday

The Waukon football team did its part in clinching its best possible seeding for the Class 2A State Play-Offs by wrapping up the 2015 regular season with a 46-12 rout at Oelwein Friday, October 23 for an 8-1 overall record and 5-1 mark in Class 2A District 3. Unfortunately, North Fayette Valley, the only team to defeat the Indians this season, also did its part on its own behalf, defeating New Hampton, 19-0, to wrap up the top play-off seed in Class 2A District 3. But the Indians did get some help from Dyersville Beckman in clinching the number-two play-off seed and a first-round home play-off game. The Indians needed Beckman to either lose, or only win by nine or fewer points while the Indians needed to win by at least four points more than any single-digit Beckman winning margin. The Blazers went into overtime with Center Point Urbana, handing the Class 2A District 3 second seed to the Indians by defeating Center Point Urbana by just a 20-14 result in overtime, giving the Indians the advantage in the Point Differential Average used as a play-off seeding tie-breaker for teams with equal district win-loss records. Beckman ended up as the Class 2A District 3 number-three seed, behind the Indians but ahead of fourth-seeded New Hampton.

The Indians will now host Union of LaPorte City in their first-round Class 2A State Play-Off game this Wednesday, October 28, beginning at 7 p.m. Union played to a 4-5 regular season record this fall, including a 4-2 mark in Class 2A District 6 to finish third behind 9-0 South Tama and 7-2 Aplington-Parkersburg. The only common opponent the Knights share with the Indians from this season is Center Point Urbana, who beat Union by a 27-25 count in Week 2 of this season in a game where Knight junior Isaiah Vaughn rushed for 263 yards.

Other first-round State Play-Off games scheduled for Wednesday, October 28 featuring Class 2A District 3 qualifiers include North Fayette Valley (7-2) hosting Cascade (4-5), Dyersville Beckman (6-3) playing at Mt. Vernon (7-2), and New Hampton (4-5) playing at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (7-2). Winners will advance on to the Class 2A second round, with those second-round games scheduled for Monday, November 2 and including match-ups to be determined after Wednesday's first-round games are complete.
