Counterfeit $10 bill surfaces in Waukon

The Waukon Police Department wants the local community to be aware that there has been a report of counterfeit money that has surfaced in Waukon. The Waukon Chamber of Commerce received a report last week from a business in Waukon that received a counterfeit ten dollar bill.
The bill was confirmed to be counterfeit through use of a counterfeit indication pen. The Waukon Police Department suggests that the most effective way to detect counterfeit currency is with such a pen that reacts to the wood-based paper used by most counterfeiters in comparison to the fiber-based paper used by the United States Treasury.
The Waukon Police Department also suggests being aware of denominations beyond just the $10 bill that has recently surfaced and offers the following indicators placed within authentic bills printed by the U.S. Treasury for further detection in identifying counterfeit vs. authentic bills. The indicator information was gleaned from the uscurrency.gov website, and the counterfeit $10 bill that surfaced in Waukon was missing all of these indicators.
• “Color-Shifting Ink” - Tilt the note to see the numeral of the bill denomination (1, 5, 10, 20, etc.) in the lower right corner on the front of the note shift from copper to green.
• “Portrait Watermark” - Hold the note to light and look for a faint image of the individual depicted on each bill in the blank space to the right of the portrait. The image is visible from both sides of the note.
• “Security Thread” - Hold the note to light to see an embedded thread running vertically to the right of the portrait. The thread is imprinted with the text USA (bill denomination, i.e., FIVE, TEN) and a small flag in an alternating pattern and is visible from both sides of the note. The thread glows orange when illuminated by ultraviolet light.
• “Raised Printing” - Sliding one's finger along the note’s surface reveals the raised printing, which gives genuine Federal Reserve notes their distinctive texture.
• “Microprinting” - Look carefully (magnification may be necessary) to see the small printed text THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and (bill denomination, i.e., FIVE, TEN) DOLLARS USA below the portrait and inside the borders of the note and USA (bill denomination numeral, i.e., 5, 10) repeated beneath the torch.
Anyone with further questions or concerns is asked to call the Waukon Police Department.
