Waukon wrestling team finishes seventh at Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament

The Waukon wrestling team wrapped up its regular season at the annual Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Tournament hosted by Oelwein High School Saturday, January 30. The Indians followed up their seventh-place finish in the final regular season NEIC standings with the same placement in the NEIC Tournament, having just one wrestler make his way into the championship match at his respective weight, ultimately finishing second to lead the Indians to 76 team points.
Senior Joe Frieden wrestled his way to the 182-pound championship match, starting his day with a first-round bye and winning his semifinal match by decision to earn the championship berth. In that title bout, Frieden lost by major decision to top 10-rated Jamiir Moore of Waverly-Shell Rock to finish as the 182-pound NEIC runner-up, the Indians’ best finish of the tournament.
The Indians wrapped up the regular season with a 7-16 overall record, 0-6 in Northeast Iowa Conference action. They will now prepare for their Class 2A Sectional Tournament at Decorah this Saturday, February 6, details of which can be found in a shaded box on this page.
