Miles Howe, Joe Frieden to compete at 2A District Tournament this Saturday

With their runner-up finishes at the Saturday, February 6 Sectional Tournament at Decorah, Waukon wrestling seniors Miles Howe, at 113 pounds, and Joe Frieden, at 182 pounds, have earned advancement to the Class 2A District 5 Tournament being hosted by Independence High School this Saturday, February 13, beginning at 12 noon. As runner-up finishers the senior pair will first match-up with the champions in their respective weight classes from the Class 2A Sectional Tournament hosted by West Delaware High School in Manchester.
The first-round matches for the two Indians’ weight classes at this Saturday’s District Tournament are as follows:
113 pounds - Senior Miles Howe (Waukon, 39-10) vs. fourth-rated freshman Riley Wright (Denver/Tripoli, 41-3); Fifth-rated sophomore Noah Fye (New Hampton, 39-3) vs. sophomore Jarrett Orr (Independence, 29-11).
160 pounds - Senior Joe Frieden (Waukon, 21-11) vs. senior Elliott Ryan (Independence, 38-8); Top-rated senior Nick Baumler (North Fayette Valley, 36-0) vs. senior Tyler Hirsch (Dyersville Beckman, 26-11).
The two winning wrestlers will then square off against one another in the weight class championship match, with the two first-round losing wrestlers doing likewise in a consolation bout for the chance to possibly wrestle back for second place. The top two placewinners in each weight class from that District 5 Tournament will then earn the right to compete in the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament. That season grand finale is scheduled for February 18-20 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
