Waukon wrestling trio to compete in All-Star Border Battle this Friday

Howe, Fuhrman, Frieden to hit the mat one final time

The top senior wrestlers from northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota who have completed outstanding high school careers will face off in the 15th annual all-star “Border Battle” dual wrestling meet at 7 p.m. this Friday, March 4 at Crestwood High School in Cresco.
Among those wrestling for Team Northeast Iowa are a trio of Waukon High School seniors who recently completed their wrestling careers for the Indians. Miles Howe will compete at 113 pounds, Carter Fuhrman will wrestle at 160 pounds, and Joe Frieden will take the mat at 182 pounds one final time.
“Things are still up in the air as far as who will be wrestling for Minnesota, and for a few Iowa wrestlers,” stated Dennis Meirick, President of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame hosting the event. “Minnesota just finished their state tournament this weekend and will be putting their team together in the next few days.”
The Minnesota team will consist of senior wrestlers from school districts located in Mower, Fillmore and Houston counties. Overall, the series is tied at 7-7 after the Minnesota squad won last year. “I think the quality of the wrestling that we see at this meet is proven when we had over 30 coaches at last year’s meet,” Meirick stated.
Iowa wrestlers who have accepted the invitations include four place finishers from the State Tournament this year: Landers Kuboushek, State runner-up at 195 pounds from South Winneshiek; Connor Cleveland, 120-pounder for New Hampton who placed third this year and second two years ago at State; Tyler Shatek, 126-pounder for New Hampton who placed eighth; Chase Lienhard, 132-pounder from Crestwood who is a four-time state qualifier and a three-time place finisher.
Other wrestlers competing for Iowa include: Neil Clement, 152 pounds from Crestwood; Broyde Miller, 195 from MFL; Devin Stortz, 138 from Decorah; Tyler Flak, 220 from Decorah; Cole Headington, 285 from Decorah. Tickets for the event will be sold at the door at Crestwood High School.
