Waukon baseball team picks up first win of season between pair of scoreless losses

Waukon baseball sophomore catcher Abe Schwartz puts a tag on this Bulldog baserunner trying to score in the Indians’ 18-4 home victory over MFL/MarMac Wednesday, June 1 in just five innings. Schwartz took a throw from fellow sophomore Mitchell Snitker from left field in time to deny the Bulldog scoring attempt, and also chipped in from the offensive side of the plate by tagging two singles in two at-bats to score a team-high three runs and drive in two more to aid the Indians to the non-conference win. The Waukon baseball team picked up its first win of the season in a week that resulted in just three games played due to some weather interference. That win came in a big way, 18-4 in five innings, over MFL/MarMac Wednesday, June 1, but was sandwiched by a pair of scoreless losses, 15-0 in four innings at Class 3A defending State Champion Waverly-Shell Rock Tuesday, May 31 and 12-0 in five innings to Kee at home Friday, June 3. That Waverly-Shell Rock date was supposed to be a doubleheader, but stormy weather only allowed one game and forced postponement of the other to a June 20 home date for the Indians with the highly-regarded Go-Hawks.

Now holding a 1-4 season record, the Indians were next slated to host Charles City Tuesday, June 7 for a Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader before playing at Turkey Valley Wednesday, June 8 and then hosting Decorah Friday, June 10. The baseball Tribe will then play three consecutive road dates to start a busy road schedule next week, including a doubleheader at Oelwein Monday, June 13, at Osage Tuesday, June 14 and at New Hampton Wednesday, June 15 before traveling to Crestwood Friday, June 17.
