Summer Kid's Club learns about Native American culture ...

The 2016 Summer Kid's Club within the Allamakee Community School District was pleased and honored to interact with community businesses and individuals to strengthen both student and staff knowledge of the past Native American cultures of Allamakee County in relation to today's present way of life. Numerous activities compared and contrasted the culture of each time period from the content of each presentation, while integrating third, fourth and fifth grade school curriculum of English, reading, math, literature, science/health, social studies and technology/STEM into daily discussions and reviews. These programs/presentations of active student participation and the use of hands-on materials provided an opportunity for establishing student background knowledge to be used for both their enjoyment and in their future learning.

Staff members and students appreciate the efforts of the following presenters and hosts during this summer's Kid's Club program and activity events: Lynn Sorenson of Kitchen Krafts presented "Food Fun" at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon; Deb Rixen of Waukon Wellness Center presented "Dance for Kids" at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon; Green Iowa staff members presented "Native American Farming" at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon; Jeff and Elaine Goettel of Gettlebell Strength & Conditioning presented "Yoga For Kids" at Robey Memorial Library in Waukon; Andrew Blair of Allamakee Community School Health & Fitness Concern presented a program on "Healthy Food/Snacks, Gardening and Native American Seeds and Painting" throughout Allamakee Community School District facilities; Marcia Rush of the Allamakee County Historical Society/Museum and Ross Geerdes of Allamakee County Conservation presented a program on "Allamakee County Native American Emma Big Bear" at the Allamakee County Historical Society Museum; Ross Geerdes of Allamakee County Conservation presented "Native American Games" that focused on concentration and strength/skill development; Mary Techau presented a program on "Native American Basket Weaving/Emma Big Bear" within the Allamakee Community School District facilities; and Teralee Jones of Teralee's Salon and Art Studio presented "Cornhusk Dolls" within the Allamakee Community School District facilities.
