Wolfe completes summer research for Cornell College

Jordan Wolfe, a 2013 graduate of Waukon High School, just finished 10 weeks of intensive research. Wolfe, who will be staring his fourth year at Cornell College in Mount Vernon this fall, was individually selected to take part in the Cornell Summer Research Institute (CSRI) by professors at Cornell College.

Participating students took on new and ongoing projects to discover the unknown about a number of topics including box turtles, eating disorder prevention, monarch butterflies, digital games for language learning, and much more. Wolfe's research was the focus of a video produced by Cornell College and viewable at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvfODVmD-7s.
About 40 students and 20 faculty members collaborated on research projects across the liberal arts disciplines. Students worked one-on-one with Cornell College professors on more than 20 research projects that have real-world impact. In addition to collaborative student-faculty research, CSRI sponsors a student living-learning community and a variety of programs.

"The Cornell Summer Research Institute provides students with the opportunity to conduct independent research in their area of interest," said Cornell College Professor of Geology and Associate Dean Ben Greenstein, who directed the institute. "In the process, the students develop additional skills that CEOs and managers uniformly highlight as essential for the college graduates they employ. Institute programming over the 10-week interval allows students to realize the connections between the skills they are developing and their postgraduate careers."
Students worked with professors to learn and understand advanced research methods, prepare reports of their findings, and present conclusions to their peers. CSRI wrapped up in mid-July with a final student symposium showcasing their research.

This was the second year for the research institute. It was funded through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a variety of internal sources. For more information about the institute, visit www.cornellcollege.edu.
