Letter to the Editor: The duty of the American citizen at election time

To the Editor:

Call me cynical but it sure seems like some of our national politics/politicians are getting nastier than ever before. I know that there’s a lot at stake and one might even argue that our nation is in a very precarious position. Our country’s place in helping keep order and economic stability in the world is a huge burden and an honor we should accept and be proud of.

Domestically, security, commerce, uncontrolled debt, uncontrolled immigration and a host of other issues make this voting cycle something every one of us should pay attention to and get involved in. It seems that so many political conversations these days contain more “blame throwing” rather than “problem solving” statements. At the polls, how many of us are more likely to vote against a “bad candidate” rather than for a “good one”?

Locally, we are fortunate.  We will have some good people on the November ballot to choose from, and one of them will get my vote for County Supervisor. Know him by what he is. He has proven his goals and capabilities as a family leader, successful farmer and active community partner. He is approachable and friendly. This candidate believes in community involvement and support when addressing community needs. I am confident that he will listen to the people he serves and do what is best for the residents of this county. He is in the phone book. You can call him with your questions and concerns, and he will listen!

I hope that every eligible voter in Allamakee County does some research, and that they carefully weigh out how their vote for each and every individual candidate counts.  As American citizens we’re given the opportunity and duty to do so, and as citizens we should expect our elected officials to serve us responsibly and fairly.
