James George Moe, son of Julian Melvin Moe and Gladys Ilene (Gilbertson) Moe, was born November 18, 1933 on his grandparents’ farm in Center Township in Allamakee County. He was baptized at West Synod Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon, where he later served as a trustee, deacon and on the church's Building Committee.

James graduated from Waukon High School in 1950. Two weeks prior to his graduation, James’ father died so he took over the family farming operation with his mother. They farmed together until 1955 when James married.

January 30, 1955, James married Carol Roderick at St. John’s Lutheran Church. He continued to farm with Carol until 1998 when he suffered a stroke. The farm, which has been in the family since 1860, was named a Century Farm in 1960 and a Heritage Farm in 2011. James was the sixth generation to farm the land that he loved.

James and Carol had six children: Joel, Ann, Julie, Jeffrey, Glen and Todd. They enjoyed traveling to many foreign countries and to most of the states. James served on several local and county boards and was especially interested in improving the quality of life for the mentally disabled.

James is survived by his wife, Carol, of Waukon; his children: Ann (Mike) King of Hinckley, England, Julie (Doug) Olson of Audubon, Jeff and Glen Moe of Waukon, and Todd (Carol) Moe of Cedar Falls; a daughter-in-law, Yu-Chen Chi of Naperville, IL; six granddaughters, Rachel (Devin) Smith, Laura (Andy) Ratcliffe, Morgan (Mike) Stanford, Joanna (Jeff) Murnan, Thea (friend Shane Johannsen) Moe, and Sarah (Jonny) Oglesby; two step-grandchildren, Allison Dreyer and Adam King; four great-granddaughters; a sister, Judy (John) Dorumsgaard of White Bear Lake, MN; his brothers- and sisters-in-law: Gilbert and Sharon Roderick, Oliver Roderick, and Sharon (Roderick) Massie; and many nieces and nephews.
