The Kee volleyball team battled through its busiest week of the season, playing what amounted to nine total matches in a five-day span. The Hawks split a double dual at Turkey Valley Tuesday, October 4, winning three of four sets to defeat the host school in an Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) match but also falling to New Hampton in two straight sets. The Kee netters then swept a second UIC match from Postville in three straight sets at home Thursday, October 6 before winning five of six matches at the Riceville Tournament Saturday, October 8 to claim at least a share of the tournament title.

Sporting an 11-16 season record and improving to a 3-6 mark in Upper Iowa Conference play, the Hawks were scheduled to play at Central Elkader Thursday, October 13 before competing in the Upper Iowa Conference Tournament at West Central of Maynard Saturday, October 15. The Kee netters will then return to Elkader to open postseason tournament play Tuesday, October 18 against Central Elkader, details of which are in a shaded box elsewhere on these Sports pages in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.

In what had to be its final match of the day, Kee avenged its first-round tournament loss to Southland by paying back the Minnesota school with a sweeping loss of 25-19 and 25-20. Since both teams ended up with just a single loss in the tournament, and Kee had reached its daily match limit with the victory, the two teams ended up sharing the tournament team title. Severson, Kendra Cooper and Schwartzhoff paced Kee’s offense with nine, eight and seven kills, respectively, with Hill and Schwartzhoff assisting on 12 and eight kills, respectively. Kendra Cooper served up a pair of aces, with Schwartzhoff adding another. Kendra Cooper and Severson each posted another pair of solo blocks, with Strong digging up a team-high 13 saves, Schwartzhoff adding nine digs, and Burroughs, Kendra Cooper and Severson each posting seven digs.
