Good Samaritan Society's Founders Day Service Project impacts local community

The Good Samaritan Society-Waukon recently conducted its Founders Day Service Project, assisting local senior citizens with various projects to help them remain longer in their own homes. October 28 a group of individuals from the Good Samaritan Society-Waukon were able to reach out to nine senior citizens living in the local community, as staff members raked yards for seniors citizens. Prior to this day, staff and volunteers also helped change light bulbs, put in hand rails and build a ramp for three other senior families.

These activities were all part of the second annual Founders Day event the Good Samaritan Society-Waukon started last year with the goal of keeping seniors living in their homes longer and preventing them from falls or injuries that lead to a costly hospital visit or nursing home stay. “We plan to continue this project each year. We want to grow in the number of people impacted and we would love for it to be a shared community effort,” said Tatum Miller, Resource Development and Community Relations Director for Good Samaritan Society-Waukon.
Assistance recipient Byron Schultz said, “We’re so thankful you guys came, and that all the leaves had fallen before you came.”

"This project was a powerful demonstration of Good Samaritan Society-Waukon’s obligation to share God’s love in word and deed, which lead to the wonderful outcome of several seniors in our community feeling loved, valued and at peace as they live in a safer environment that they call home," the Good Samaritan Society-Waukon shared in a release about the Founders Day event. "This project would not have been successful without the help of volunteers and staff members of the Good Samaritan Society."

The Good Samaritan Society plans to continue with this project each year and those looking to have a fall prevention assessment done in their home for next year, or who would like to help volunteer, may contact Tatum Miller at the Good Samaritan Society-Waukon at 563-568-6523.
