Mary “Kay” Kathleen Mettille was born September 21, 1920 in Marquette, the daughter of John J. and Mary E. (McDonald) Finnegan. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor and graduated in 1939 from Marquette High School. After graduating, Kay moved to Des Moines, where she worked for an ammunition factory during WWII. Three years later, Kay moved back to Marquette and May 14, 1946 she married LeRoy Joseph Mettille at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The couple moved to LeRoy’s family farm in rural Waterville, where she was a devoted farmwife who lovingly cared for her husband and five children. In 2010, Kay moved to Waukon, where she had resided ever since.

Kay was a member of St. Pius Cherry Mound Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry and later St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. She also belonged to St. Pius Rosary Society, in which she held many office positions. She loved playing euchre and rummy and belonged to the Golden Girls Card Club. Kay also loved dancing, especially polkas and waltzes, and cooking; she enjoyed baking pies for everyone. She and LeRoy enjoyed rides in the country, and she liked socializing with family and friends.

She is survived by her five children: John (Leona) Mettille of Caldwell, ID, Linda Mettille of Waukon, Butch (Debbie) Mettille of North Pole, AK, Patricia Moore of Decorah and Deb (Tony) Schulte of Spring Grove, MN; 11 grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LeRoy, in 1999; her three brothers, Donald, Clare and Marcellus Finnegan; and a son-in-law, John Moore, in 2014.
Honorary casketbearers are Kay’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers are Jeff and Brian Mettille, Corey, Erick and Dalton Schulte, and Jade and Carter Lansing.
