Macy McNamara was born and raised in Waukon, and for the past four years she's been a Main Street business owner in her hometown.
McNamara opened her business, Macy's Cutting Edge, at its 100 West Main Street location on an easily remembered date of 12/12/12 (December 12, 2012). Her inspiration for opening her own business in her hometown came from her experiences growing up there.
"I grew up in Waukon and worked at a cafe for five years, so I knew a lot of people from the area," she explained, noting that it is serving the people she knows and gets to know that is most rewarding about running her own business. "I have met so many amazing people that I have become close to, like family. To see the smile on people's faces after a service is so rewarding; making people look and feel great."
McNamara received her diploma in Cosmetology from Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar. She has incorporated that education into being able to offer several different services for many to enjoy and benefit from at her salon. She also cites her scheduling flexibility and extended hours, being open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays by appointment, as other advantages that make her business unique.
McNamara also notes that long hours and not being able to "get away" much can be challenging to business owners, but also knows those challenges are instrumental in making a business successful. She hopes to continue to grow and expand her business and services to be able to hire additional staff in the future.
In addition to being a business owner, McNamara is also a mother to her eight-year-old daughter, Annabel. She is engaged to Verle Fish, Jr. and they plan to be married August 26, 2017.
