Waukon Music Department to host annual Pops Concert February 25 …

The music departments of Waukon High School and Waukon Middle School will be hosting the seventh annual Pops Concert Saturday, February 25 at the Waukon Middle School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with concert time at 7:30 p.m. The Pops Concert features high energy musical numbers from the 1950s through today.  Nearly every musical group at the Waukon Middle School and Waukon High School participates in this concert, including jazz bands, bucket bands, select sixth grade vocalists, and all choral groups in grades 7-12. Musical numbers will feature solo performances, percussionists, guitar players and choreographed movements. This year, the Pops Concert will feature special appearances from the choir program’s very own Barbershop Quartet.

Some of the numbers performed this year will include "Girls Rock the 80s”, “Pompeii”, “Rainbow Connection”, “The Longest Time”, and “What a Wonderful World.” Plus, the drumline and high school band will perform “The Twist” and the jazz bands will perform “No Bones About It,” “Bringin’ Down the House,” “After Sunset” and more.

The Pops Concert is an annual fundraising event sponsored by the Allamakee Music Boosters. It replaced the Spaghetti Supper seven years ago and has proven to be a very popular change for all involved and all who attend the event. "The students are once again working hard for this year’s Pops Concert. The music provided will be high energy and enjoyable for persons of all ages!” stated JoAnn Sherman, Waukon High School Band Director.

The money raised from this event has been allocated in the past by the Allamakee Music Boosters to help purchase items such as drumline equipment, risers, pianos and various pieces of equipment for all grades, as well as providing scholarships for students attending camps. "As a teacher, seeing the students’ hard work come together on stage after months of preparation is the greatest reward,” adds Sarah Bieber Palmer, Waukon High School Vocal Director. “We have an opportunity to share our gift of music to the community Saturday, February 25, and we invite community members of all ages to join us in this night of musical entertainment!"

The Pops Concert is open to the public for an admission fee and includes refreshments. The general admission seating is on a first come, first served basis in the bleachers and chairs located in the back of the gymnasium. Tables for this event sell out quickly each year.
