Waukon bowling team experiences variety of success in inaugural season on the lanes

The winter of 2016-2017 saw the inauguration of a high school bowling season at Waukon High School, and even though, as one might expect, there were some growing pains with a brand new season for a program never before undertaken, that growth carried over from pains to the establishment of a program with a promising future.

“I told the kids at the beginning of the season that you only get one first season and we have to put a good foundation in place,” Waukon bowling coach Jerry Keenan said. “This season has been a great experience for the participants. It allowed for another opportunity for high school students to get involved in an extracurricular activity. The bowlers had an enjoyable experience and made a lot of new friends along the way. It will be a lifelong activity for some. Bowling was a great addition to the extra-curriculars at our school and I thank the administration, the school board, and Scott Oder at Odie’s Place for making this opportunity happen.”

The Waukon girls bowled to a 4-5 season record in their dual meet season, with the Waukon boys turning in a 3-6 dual meet result. Even though those results proved to be about average, number-wise, for a first-year competing squad, there were some much higher reaching and impact moments throughout those results that made this first-ever season even more memorable.

Coach Keenan also knows that he and his team had a great amount of help in making their first season the success that it was. “I also need to express a tremendous amount of gratitude to Scott Oder and the staff at Odie’s Place,” the first-year coach acknowledged. “There is a lot of work that goes into making an event and practice run smoothly and Scott always made certain that happened. Our team had an enormous amount of respect for Scott and Odie’s Place and we would like to thank him for the relationship that was established. Our community is fortunate to have a bowling center that is as supportive as Odie’s Place. We would not have been able to have the experience that we did without their hard work.”
