Career milestone among highlights of 4-17 season for 2016-2017 Kee boys basketball

The Kee boys basketball team played its way to a 4-17 record this winter, battling through its lowest per game scoring average in the past 10 seasons. That 47.2 points per game average posted by this season’s squad couldn’t quite keep pace with the 57.8 points per game the Hawks allowed on defense this winter.

“As a team, we came close to knocking off Turkey Valley in the first round of the tournament, but poor free throw shooting at the end of the game allowed Turkey Valley to extend a narrow lead and take the victory,” Coach Sullivan remarked.

That evidence of improvement throughout this season is something Coach Sullivan would like to see his charges grab hold of and build upon before the next season even starts. “I’d like to see returning players pick up a basketball in the off-season and shoot on a daily basis,” he explained. “It takes about 15 minutes to shoot 100 free throws or 100 three pointers. Every kid in the program can take 15 minutes a day minimum and shoot 100 shots. As is, most kids don’t pick up a basketball until the season starts in November, but you can’t do this with basketball and be successful, because it’s a game of skill. The only way to gain skill is through repetition, but if we’re getting our repetition once the season starts, we’re already behind all the teams who have put in work in the off-season. We have enough athletic kids in the program to take the next step, but we’re lacking basketball players, kids who can dribble, pass and shoot. I’m hoping that returning players will pick up a basketball this off-season and make themselves into basketball players.”
