Waukon High School Prom and Post Prom were held Saturday, April 29. This year's theme for the Prom dance held in the Waukon Middle School gym was "A Night Under the Stars" with Parker Lane providing the music. The Post Prom committee provided a photo booth and prizes every 15 minutes during the dance, with prizes including gift certificates to local restaurants, theaters and baseball organizations and a $100 cash drawing at 11 p.m. for students that were present through the entire dance, won by Waukon High School junior Landon Berns (pictured at right). Students also enjoyed an ice cream bar, a dance cam and board games in the cafeteria.
Doors to the Post Prom event opened at 10:45 p.m. in the Waukon High School cafeteria where the Post Prom food committee provided many donated items from local food venues. The doors to the gym opened at 11:30 p.m. for students to play games (as pictured below) and earn tickets to put in designated buckets for prize drawings. Games ranged from a bouncy house, lip sync contest, Speak Out, black jack, dice, floor Jenga and lawn games, to spin the wheel. The game event lasted for two hours which then led to the main event of hypnotist Derrick Watkins from New Jersey through Wand Enterprises. Students had the opportunity to entertain their peers on the stage as they were hypnotized (as pictured above).
The Post Prom event ended with the anticipated prize drawings from 3-3:30 a.m. All students left the Post Prom event with a prize, a $15 or $10 gift card to a local business, and a treat bag. Big ticket items included two kayaks, four 32” TVs, two microwaves, two dorm refrigerators, a men’s and women’s bike, a drone, Apple Airpods, men’s watch, woman’s garnet pendant necklace, four blue tooth speakers, six luggage sets, $25 gift certificates to all the local restaurants, and numerous donated and fund-raised prizes for every participant. The 2017 Post Prom Committee made a very conscious effort to purchase items from all the local businesses, whether it be prizes or gift certificates. They felt that it was extremely important to promote the community that generously donates to the Post Prom event. "Providing students with prizes purchased in the community and gift certificates to use in the community shows our students all the wonderful assets and opportunities there are in Waukon," shared Waukon High School Post Prom Committee leadership. "The Post Prom Committee would also like to thank the community, parents and businesses for all the generous donations." Submitted photo.
