Ruth Schlitter

Ruth A. Schlitter, 88, of Oelwein, formerly of Allison, died Saturday morning, May 20, 2017 at Grandview Health Care Center in Oelwein. Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held Tuesday, May 23 at Grace United Methodist Church, Oelwein with Pastor Connie Markle officiating. Interment was at the Monona City Cemetery, Monona.

Ruth Ann Swenson was born January 11, 1929 in Post Township, Allamakee County, the daughter of Lloyd and Cora (Leppert) Swenson.  She graduated from Waukon High School in the Class of 1947.
Ruth was united in marriage to Robert H. Schlitter October 1, 1947 at the Evangelical Church Parsonage in Monona. She worked at Veterans Memorial Hospital and the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.  Ruth and her family moved to Allison in 1971 where she was the office manager for the Allison Care Center, retiring in 1999. Bob and Ruth moved to Oelwein in 2009.

Ruth had previously been active in several churches as a Sunday School superintendent and teacher for over 12 years, a member of church ladies groups and as a deacon. She was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Garden Club, Herb Society, Community Club of Allison, Food Pantry of Allison, Gundersen Palmer Hospice and Fontana Park.  Ruth was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein, where she had been administrative board chair and founded the grief support group that meets at the church.

Ruth enjoyed quilting, gardening, baking cookies and spending time with her friends and her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ruth is survived by her three children: Dale (Tammy) Schlitter of Bartlett, IL, Jan (Terry) Tilleraas of Dodgeville, WI and Dean (Sue) Schlitter of Oelwein; six grandchildren: Mike Schlitter of Palm Springs, CA, Andy (Emily) Tilleraas of San Pierre, IN, Jessica (Greg) Phelps of Colchester, IL, Laura Schlitter of Purmerend, The Netherlands, Dan Schlitter of Bartlett, IL and Emily Schlitter of Bartlett, IL; six great-grandchildren: Loren, MacKenzie and Mallory Tilleraas of San Pierre, IN, and Janie, William and Alaina Phelps of Colchester, IL; two great-great-granchildren, Jordyn and Jadyn Tabler; a sister-in-law, Neva Swenson of Chatfield, MN; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob, February 17, 2012; two brothers, Art Swenson and Hubert Swenson; three sisters, Lulu Patterson, Marie Timmerman and Jeneil Swenson, in infancy.
