Identity mystery solved for World War I Veterans ...

The identity of the men pictured above in this photo that previously ran in the April 5, 2017 edition of The Standard in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the United States' entry into World War I has since been solved. The photo, simply labeled "WWI Veterans," hangs in the Vet's Club in Waukon, with no further details or names being listed with the photo. After publishing the photo earlier this year near the April 6 100th anniversary of the United States joining World War I by declaring war on Germany on that date in 1917, Jim Normann of Waukon recalled seeing such a photo in his family's collection of such items and came across the newspaper clipping of the same photo, along with the following photo caption:

Long-time members of the local American Legion post present to get their pins Saturday were: Front row, left to right: Archie Campbell, Leslie W. Kerndt, Sr., Louis F. Miller, Ben Peterson, Glenn A. Hagen, Al Hummel, Dr. Leonard L. Shurtleff, Dr. Ray R. Jeffries. Back row: Birger Normann, Walter L. Siegele, Frederick C. O'Riley, Alfred Smedsrud, Alexander Drogset, Carl L. Groezinger, Ludwig Larson, Charles A. Palmer, Roy Walters.

Normann further identified his grandfather, Birger Normann, who is pictured first at left in the back row of the photo. Neither the issue date nor the name of the newspaper the clipping was printed in was included, as the photo and caption had been cut out of the newspaper. The Standard appreciates the efforts of all involved in trying to identify the men in the photo. Submitted photo.
