Allamakee County Conservation Board to host Summer Day Camps

The Allamakee County Conservation Board (ACCB) will be hosting a series of summer day camps for the youth of Allamakee County throughout the months of June and July. The camps will be held at parks throughout Allamakee County.

The series will feature camps for all age levels from three to 15 years of age. All camps will be free of charge, however, participants must be pre-registered.

Youth ages three to six are invited to attend, with an adult, two storytimes from 9:30-11 a.m. June 22 and June 27 at County Home Park just north of Waukon on Highway 9. June 22, “Native Animals” will feature animals that are native to Iowa. The June 27 “Teeth” storytime will feature educational activities about the teeth of animals and how they use them. Both camps will feature educational stories, activities and crafts to make and take home.

Children ages seven to 10 will be able to participate in Birds Camp July 27. Birds Camp will be from 9:30-11 a.m. at County Home Park.  Participants will learn about kinds of birds in Iowa, what calls they make, and why they have different colors.

“Creek Stomp” at the Waterville Farm 55 Park, located off East Main Street in Waterville, will be a day camp for anyone 10-15 years of age July 18 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Participants will learn about the ecology of coldwater streams that are a part of the geology of the Driftless Region of northeast Iowa.  Rocks will be overturned, crayfish will be caught, and frogs will be picked up so participants should wear clothes that can get dirty. Participants should also pack a sack lunch.

A fly fishing workshop will be held June 29 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. for any youth 12-15 years of age interested in learning about the art of fly fishing. The fly fishing workshop will be at Waterville Farm 55, near Waterville.  Fishing poles, fly rods and lures will be provided by the ACCB. This camp is limited to 10 participants.
